ZOMBIE JAMS #1

Weezer - Across The Sea

So, I've been thinking about this for a while and I'm quite sure that every Thursday I want to post one of my favourite songs and chat a little bit about it. I'm calling it zombie jams and I hope that you like it.

This week's entry is from my favourite Weezer record, Pinkerton. Admittedly, I discovered this album fairly recently and although I'd always been familiar with Weezer's singles, it wasn't until the last few years that they have become one of my favourite bands ever (My earlier years were laughably metal-centric). Story goes, Rivers wrote this song during his time at Harvard while the band was on a break. He was tired of the limelight and descended into a haze of isolation and anxiety, committing himself entirely to studying and writing music. The recording is far rawer than their debut Blue album, it's dark at times and the record personifies everything I love about the band.

Across the sea is Rivers' reply to a letter he received from a teenage fan from Japan during his time at Harvard. The lyrics are honest, naive and incredibly lonely. For me, the song is perfectly melancholic and I'm reminded of certain friends in faraway places. Also, there is like 4 key changes in the solo which is awesome because even though Weezer write pretty simple songs, Those dudes really know how to imbue their songs with a sense of complexity when necessary.
Listen during winter for maximum effect.

We best friendssss.

Got this little guy to commemorate spending the coolest 2 weeks of my life in Tokyo and also, me and Michael's ever blossoming dude-romance. To be fair, he got his first, it's on his foot and he is much browner than me, hence it's slightly faded appearance. I'm sorry about this. I swear this blog will become more exciting once I go back to school and start playing shows.

EDIT: Oh, I almost forgot. Both tattoos were zapped By Clare Hampshire. Check her out at www.claritytattoo.com .

Towards the end of last year I was asked to exhibit some work at an event at Ghettoblaster, a club night at Darlinghurst's Q Bar. I eventually invited my far more talented friend Em to get involved and we kicked out the jams together. Despite the obligatory week-before freakout It turned out being a lot of fun. Em's stuff was adorable and it was interesting sharing the stupid monsters and comic book villains I scribble all over my school books with a few different people. Check out Emily's stuff at lightandtext.tumblr.com.

Listening To:

the wonder years - the upside
man overboard - real talk
Jawbreaker - 24 hour revenge therapy
the replacements - let it be
withdrawal - promised heaven given hell, unknown misery
the damned things - Ironiclast

Other people's work

I really hate the idea of using a blog simply to re-post other people's work and achievements. I created this thing to share my opinions and direct my creativity in some way or another. Sharing my art, work and snapshots of my life. That's my problem with tumblr. In terms of it's functions, it's pretty useful but it is built almost entirely on a culture of posting other people's crap and using it as a means to define yourself. That bothers me.

Anyway, My iphone4 camera lens has a scratch on it and a lousy friend dropped our 5D. So watch now as I completely contradict myself.

These are some of my favourite songs of all time. I listen to them more than once a day, most days. They aren't necessarily what i consider the brand of music I generally listen to but they are completely infectious and utterly amazing. Listen to them and be whisked away.
